A different kind of Cointreau

Yesterday, Cointreau held a launch party for their first new product ever...
Cointreau Noir. Some of the finest bartenders the city has to offer, were invited to Yoshi's to taste the new product. Cointreau Noir is the famous orange liqueur blended with cognac (sound familiar?), but they also infuse a walnut/almond element into the process during distillation. Although everyone in the room wanted to draw comparisons to the famous Grand Marnier, it seemed as if the two were separated. Fair enough...the focus was supposed to be the Noir. At any rate, Cointreau Noir is definitely interesting and worth trying, and I can't wait to play around with some behind the bar. The packaging was my least favorite aspect of the new product. It looks the same as the classic Cointreau bottle, with the exception that it is a shiny copper color...hhmm..not sure about that. At least you won't lose it on the back of the bar...or anywhere else for that matter. Look for it soon, and see what you think.

It's OK to be bitter

On the whole, the American palette is overwhelmingly sweet. From Lemon Drops to Mojitos, and even Jack and Cokes these sugar heavy cocktails dominate what the country is really drinking. Don't get me wrong, sugar absolutely has it's place in a proper cocktail in terms of balancing out acidity. When you taste a cocktail and it is sweet on your tongue from front to back, how many of those cocktails could you possibly enjoy consecutively? Here is my solution, or at least a jumping point...try a Negroni. This classic cocktail is made with equal parts gin, sweet vermouth, and Campari. If you've never had one, give it a shot...I think you will be pleasantly surprised. After that, consult your bartender on which direction to go in next...at least here, we will not disappoint. We shall overcome..

Oh, how we take things for granted...

In the last few weeks at B&B, I've had a lot of people at the Bar express gratitude for our extensive whiskey selection. In addition to the fact that we do showcase some fantastic spirits, we also have a freedom in ordering that we take for granted. Liquor laws vary from state to state, country to country. There are places that have only specific booze that they can obtain from a specific location. What a dilemma for bartenders and patrons alike in those places! At any rate, that's what brings us to the selection and service that we provide. Stop by and see the wall of whiskies that we all take for granted, and more importantly exercise your California right to enjoy it!

Where is my Bartender?

So for those of you who might have heard of Tales of the Cocktail, but are not sure what it is, I will try to explain. Quite simply, Tales is the annual epic festival of the Bar industry. Think along the lines of MacWorld(sans the lanyards), except for much cooler people...(yeah, I said it...come on, have a sense of humor!) Once a year, bartenders and insiders alike from around the world converge in New Orleans for a few days of cocktail demos, tastings, seminars, competitions, and a cocktail or two. This year, the event runs from July 16th-July 20th. So if your usual barkeep has suddenly gone missing, have no fear, it is merely a brief hiatus. For all the local bartenders that have gone, have a great time! For more information, you can also check out the website.. Talesofthecocktail.com.

So the wait is finally over...Russell's Room is here. Russell's Room is the newest bar at Bourbon&Branch. The Bar is an intimate setting, ideal for smaller crowds. From the plush furniture, to the authentic cigar boxes lining the wall, Russell's Room is a tip of the hat to the "JJ Russell Cigar Shop" that was the front for the actual Speakeasy during Prohibition. Reservations are only a click away...come see what it's all about.
As if it couldn't get any more exciting,...I submit it can. The Barstaff at B&B will be launching our highly anticipated Summer Menu!! Six different spirits...six bartenders...six individual drinks..something for everyone...get ready...

Ladies and Gentlemen...Mr. Jamie Boudreau

Bourbon and Branch has a very special guest this week. Starting Monday, May 26, Jamie Boudreau will be bartending at Bourbon&Branch. For those of you who might not have heard of Jamie, here's a quick rundown. Jamie Boudreau is considered to be one of the finest bartenders in the world. Bold statement?, perhaps, but he has the credentials to back it up. Jamie has bartended all over the world, and has been featured in so many publications that it might give me carpal tunnel if I listed them all. Most recently, Jamie presided over the upscale bar Vessel in Seattle...he was named Seattle Magazine's 2007 Bartender of the Year. If you haven't heard of him, check out his blog at spiritsandcocktails.com. After that, run don't walk to Bourbon&Branch. On Monday and Tuesday of this week Jamie will be in the front bar making cocktails. Jamie will then move it back to the Library on Wednesday and Thursday, where he will have his own special menu. This promises to be a very special engagement, and we hope everyone can make it out and say hello to Jamie, and welcome him to San Francisco.

Thanks for the hazy memories...

Cocktail Week 2008 at Bourbon & Branch was a success this year! The bartenders came up with some very well received cocktails, and all of our guests seemed to have a blast this past week. We even managed to have tropical weather in San Francisco(?) for cocktail week! A lot of work went into the last week at B&B, and we hope that everyone had as much fun as we did! Lastly I would like to thank Josh Durr for coming in from Kentucky and bartending with us for an evening. I could really get used to these festivities at B&B...more to come...stay tuned..

Sazerac Theory

The Sazerac is the perhaps the most enigmatic cocktail of all time. It seems to assume a certain level of formlessness. It's an undisputed classic, yet every bartender seems to have their own expression of what a Sazerac should be...I don't know if there is a wrong answer, and I love that about the drink. There was a movie called "The Aristocrats", where comedians in show business all used the same punchline in a joke, but had different ways of getting to it. In a nutshell, I have come to appreciate the Sazerac as a counterpart to "The Aristocrats" in our profession. All of the conflict subsides in my mind, and I embrace every unique Sazerac, and look forward to many more.
It is not a coincidence that I haven't said what is in a Sazerac so far... come on in..

Cocktail Week 08...

For those of you who might not know, Cocktail Week in San Francisco is May 13th through the 19tht. Yes, I know this is two weeks down the road, but we all need to prepare ourselves. San Francisco as a whole, will pull together and celebrate one of our true native art forms..mixology. The week promises to be somewhat memorable..at best. I am tempted to draw comparison to some sort of religious rite, but I'll keep it vague so I don't unintentionally offend. The point is, we at Bourbon & Branch can barely contain our excitement. Details of cocktails, and other
B&B Cocktail Week events are on the horizon...
